Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, is married to Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Although she has been a devoted member of the royal family since 1999, she gained notice from audiences worldwide after sitting next to Meghan Markle in a car during the royal procession to Westminster Abbey.
Kinsey Schofield, a royal specialist, said that Sophie struggled to settle in when she initially joined the royal family because of her striking similarity to Princess Diana.
The two ladies were frequently contrasted, and some royal observers even charged Sophie with attempting to “steal Princess Diana’s style.” According to Schofield, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Prince Andrew’s wife, experienced a similar situation at the time.
Despite the early difficulties in winning over the populace, the Queen seems to have welcomed Sophie into the family and cultivated a strong bond with her over the years. The only non-blood relative present at the Queen’s side in Balmoral during the monarch’s final hours was Sophie, who the Queen frequently referred to as her second daughter.
The earl and countess got together while holding down regular occupations, and they wanted their marriage to maintain that normalcy. Sophie wanted to expand her already successful PR agency, while Prince Edward wished to continue pursuing his passion for the art world by working as a producer.
Sophie’s existence in the spotlight has not been without controversy. After a scandal known as “Sophiegate” in 2001, Edward and Sophie decided to abandon their plans for regular life, abandoning their careers and devoting their time to the royal family.
The Queen’s response to the scandal demonstrated her love for her son and his wife even more. She publicly rebuked Sophie’s accusers and expressed her support for her.
The Queen deplores the entrapment, deception, insinuation, and lying that the earl and countess have been subject to lately, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace that was issued when the incident emerged.
Schofield thinks that with Sophie’s background in both the PR industry and the royal family, she could have served as a fantastic mentor for Markle in handling the unwanted media coverage. But Markle didn’t seem interested in that relationship, as she instead worked with American PR agencies “who don’t understand the ins and outs of royalty.”
The two’s relationship appeared to have further deteriorated when Markle and Prince Harry criticised the royal family in an appearance with Oprah Winfrey.
In answer to a query about the interview from a British tabloid, Sophie gave the impression that she wasn’t pleased with Markle. She jokingly responded, “Oprah Who?” when questioned about her opinion.
She has a very different relationship with Kate, the Princess of Wales. They appear to love and respect one another genuinely. Schofield said they are both aware of the challenges associated with marrying into the royal family and the patience and fortitude needed for their jobs.
“The Princess of Wales and Countess Sophie have great affection and respect for one another. Body armor and much patience are necessary to be a Windsor wife, “said Schofield.
Both Kate and Sophie maintain the refined demeanor that one would expect from members of the royal family. But Schofield claims that the two are frequently spotted making jokes and laughing together.
