Natalie Portman, real name Natalie Hershlag, is an Israeli-American actress born in Jerusalem on June 9, 1981. She is renowned for her ability to portray complex precocious young women’s struggles with aristocratic poise and nuance.
Natalie Hershlag was born in Jerusalem to an American mother and an Israeli father who became a fertility specialist. The family relocated to Syosset, Long Island, New York, in 1984 and finally settled there.
Hershlag briefly worked as a model before pursuing acting, landing her first movie part in Léon: The Professional (1994; The Professional). She played a teenage girl who is training to be an assassin after her parents are killed in a film starring French actor Jean Reno. To shield herself from unwelcome attention as a result of the role, which had undertones of sexuality, Hershlag took on her maternal grandmother’s last name at this time.
