Robert Lepage Biography

Robert Lepage is a Canadian writer, director, designer, and actor who was born in Quebec City on December 12, 1957. He is renowned for his highly inventive stage and screen creations, which frequently fused divergent cultural allusions and unexpected media.

In Quebec City, Lepage grew up in a working-class family. The Québec Conservatoire of Music and Dramatic Art, today known as the Conservatoire de Musique et d’Art Dramatique du Québec, awarded him a diploma in 1978. Lepage joined Théâtre Repère in Quebec in 1982 after studying with Swiss director Alain Knapp in Paris.

Jacques Lessard’s theatre group depended on actors’ direct participation to identify the crucial element or pattern required to construct the performance. Lepage was appointed the company’s artistic director in 1985. The same year, he performed Vinci, a one-man play about a young photographer adjusting to the suicide of a buddy.

Lepage was known for contrasting multicultural aspects in his plays, frequently with unexpected results. He presented a portion of his Dragon’s Trilogy (1985) in Chinese. He used two pianos to represent the continents of Europe and North America in Tectonic Plates (1988; filmed 1992), a play about the clash of French Canadian and Scottish cultures.

In 1989, Lepage resigned from Théâtre Repère to take the helm of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa’s French theatre division. In Needles and Opium (1991), which he produced there, actors Ramin Lepage and Jean Cocteau, a French poet and director, and Miles Davis, an American jazz musician, switch roles.

Lepage pictured the men as heroin addicts, simultaneously travelling between New York and Paris in 1949. Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was placed in a mud bath by Lepage in 1992, which caused controversy at the British National Theatre.

His Film Career

Lepage participated in a number of opera performances in addition to his theatre activity. He oversaw the Canadian Opera Company’s staging of Bluebeard’s Castle by Béla Bartók and Erwartung by Arnold Schoenberg in 1993. He produced the opera version of George Orwell’s novel 1984 at Covent Garden in London in 2005, and he staged Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels in 2007.

Lepage also worked in the film industry, making his acting debut in Jesus of Montreal (1988) as Pontius Pilate in a Passion play. Lepage, who wrote and produced Le Confessional (1995), drew comparisons between the circumstances surrounding the production of Alfred Hitchcock’s I Confess (1952) and the lives of his modern characters. Le Polygraph (1996), a metaphysical detective tale inspired by the murder of one of his friends, was based on Lepage’s play from 1987.

The 2000 film Possible Worlds, which was adapted from a play by John Mighton, explored many scenarios in which Tilda Swinton and Tom McCamus could have been married. Based on his play of the same name, Lepage wrote and directed La Face cachée de la lune (2003; The Far Side of the Moon), which also included him in the roles of the two main characters.

Lepage used his theatrical skills for a variety of different projects. In 1993 and 2002, he organised tours for British rock musician Peter Gabriel, and in 2005, the Las Vegas debut of K, a performance he had planned for Cirque du Soleil, took place. The Image Mill, a sizable light installation he created in 2008, projected historical images of Quebec onto the side of a Quebec City building.
