Kiefer Sutherland, full name Kiefer Dempsey, William Frederick British-born Canadian actor George Rufus Sutherland (born December 21, 1966, in London, England) received praise for his work in films, particularly for his portrayals of evil characters, but 24 may have been the source of his greatest success (2001–10, 2014).
Sutherland was the son of Shirley Douglas and Canadian actor Donald Sutherland. He went to Canada with his mother and twin sister when his parents divorced in 1971, but at the age of 15, he dropped out of school to focus on his acting career. In Max Dugan’s Returns, he made his big-screen debut with his father (1983).
He scored a major role in The Bay Boy the following year, for which he was nominated for a Genie Award for the outstanding actor by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. He portrayed a bully in the hit film Stand by Me (1986).
Sutherland’s scary performance garnered a lot of attention, and even though he normally sought out different roles, villains came to be his speciality. He made his name as one of Hollywood’s top young actors by appearing in many well-liked movies, such as The Lost Boys (1987) and Young Guns (1988).

Julia Roberts and Sutherland co-starred in the thriller Flatliners in 1990; the couple’s subsequent engagement and separation served as media fodder. Both the feature film Truth or Consequences, N.M. and the 1993 television movie Last Night were directed by Sutherland (1997).

Sutherland briefly took a break from acting to compete in rodeos, but he soon made his way back to Hollywood. He continued to perform in movies while working on 24, such as Taking Lives (2004) and The Sentinel (2006). He voiced a dog in the comic book adaption Marmaduke (2010), a general in the animated comedy Monsters vs. Aliens, and the narrator of the suspenseful drama Twelve (2010).
Sutherland co-starred with John Hurt in the episodic series The Confession, which was streamed on the website Hulu in 2011 and made an appearance in Lars von Trier’s dramatic movie Melancholia. He made his Broadway debut in a revival of Jason Miller’s That Championship Season, a drama about a high-school basketball coach and his team coming together again after nearly 20 years, in the same year.
Sutherland made a comeback on network television with the 2012–2013 series Touch, in which he played the father of a young child with special abilities. He played a Wall Street executive in Mira Nair’s 2012 movie The Reluctant Fundamentalist.
In the television movies 24: Redemption (2008) and 24: Live Another Day (2014), Sutherland resumed his role as Jack Bauer. He later played the same role in the follow-up to Flatliners, which bears the same name (2017).
He also played a low-ranking cabinet member who becomes president after several members of the U.S. government are murdered in an attack on the country in the TV show Designated Survivor (2016–19). Capitol during the State of the Union speech; the programme was discontinued by ABC in 2018, but Netflix released the third season the following year.
Sutherland continued to make appearances in motion pictures, including the drama Where Is Kyra? (2017), in which he played the boyfriend of a divorcee (Michelle Pfeiffer) who was struggling with money.
