Barbara Joan Streisand’s Biography

Barbara Joan Streisand, better known by her given name Barbra Streisand, was an American singer, composer, actor, director, and producer widely regarded as her generation’s best pop vocalist. She was born on April 24, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York.

Streisand transformed female success in the 1960s and 1970s with her sympathetic representation of ethnic urban characters. She was the first big female star to command jobs as a Jewish actor.

She rose to become one of the most prominent women in entertainment, known for her liberal ideas and philanthropy, and her enormous popularity was only surpassed by her outspokenness.

Streisand joined a summer theatre company in Malden Bridge, New York, to become a dramatic actress. While still a high school student, she started taking acting classes.

She relocated to Manhattan after graduating, where she got her big break in 1960 when she sang at a small neighbourhood nightclub and won a talent competition for amateurs (and dropped the second a from her first name).

After performing in cabarets in Greenwich Village, she landed the small comic role of Miss Marmelstein in the Broadway production of I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962), and she stole the show.

She became an instant hit, frequently appearing on television, most notably on The Judy Garland Show, and starting in 1963, releasing many best-selling record albums that included lively and unique renditions of well-known songs. The Barbra Streisand Album, her debut solo effort, received the first two of many Grammy Awards for best female vocal performance and album of the year.

In the pivotal role of Fanny Brice in the musical Funny Girl, Streisand became a great Broadway star (1964). For My Name Is Barbra, the first of a string of wildly popular television specials, she received two Emmy Awards in 1965.

In 1968, she made her film debut in a Fanny Brice reprise for which she won an Academy Award. Funny Girl established several enduring aspects of Streisand’s movie persona, including her transformation from an uncomfortable ugly duckling to a fashionable, sophisticated star, her Jewish heritage, and her persistence and determination, even though it depicts Brice’s life rather than Streisand’s.

The fact that Streisand had succeeded despite the widespread early belief that her unusual appearance would prevent her from becoming a major movie star was highlighted by her self-deprecating opening line, “Hello, gorgeous,” said into a mirror, and her first solo number, “I’m the Greatest Star.”

She portrayed screwball heroines in comedies like What’s Up, Doc? (1972) and The Owl and the Pussycat (1970), as well as the love lead in the hugely successful The Way We, Were (1973). With Yentl, a 1983 film based on an Isaac Bashevis Singer short tale about a young woman who poses as a man to pursue her education, she made her directorial debut. In addition to cowriting and coproducing the film, Streisand also costarred in the title role she had dreamed of playing since 1968.

In Nuts (1987), The Prince of Tides (1991), and The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), three films she mostly focused on straight dramatic parts and two of which she also directed. But she subsequently made appearances in the big-budget comedies The Guilt Trip, Little Fockers, and Meet the Fockers (2012). Despite their apparent diversity, Streisand’s characters tend to have a combination of tough independence and sensitivity.

Among Streisand’s many honours were a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy (1995) and a medal from the French Legion of Honor (2007). In addition to receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015, she earned a Kennedy Center Honor in 2008.
