As it adapts to a post-pandemic slowdown that has led it to lay off 12,000 employees or approximately 6% of its workforce, Amazon is attempting to sell empty space in its cargo jets.
Amazon launches air freight services
Amazon.com Inc. is starting air freight services in India as it continues to grow in Asia despite a slowdown in global online sales growth after a surge during the epidemic.
According to Akhil Saxena, vice president of customer fulfilment, the e-commerce retail giant will start shipping to Hyderabad, Bangalore, New Delhi, and Mumbai using cargo space on a Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by partner Quikjet Cargo Airlines Pvt.
Air cargo demand has decreased, and this year is expected to see even more slowing in the industry. Saxena stated at an Amazon Air launch ceremony in Hyderabad, southern India, on Monday that the Seattle-based e-commerce company has a fleet of more than 110 aircraft operating to more than 70 destinations worldwide. In addition to preparing to sublet unused warehouse space, Amazon is providing seats on own aircraft and on charter ones.
In 2016, Amazon launched its air cargo service, which was quickly perceived as a rival to FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service Inc. Small regional airports near Amazon’s warehouses serve as the base for Amazon Air, which helps the business fulfil one- and two-day delivery orders.
