Why some royal watchers believe that Meghan Markle won’t curtsy to Kate Middleton now that she is the Princess of Wales

In the spring of 2020, Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, left the aristocracy. Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles still belong to Meghan and Harry, but they are no longer senior working royals.

There have been many changes within the royal family since Harry’s father, King Charles III, arrived on the throne after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. New etiquette guidelines are adopted, family dynamics are entirely different, and royal titles have been flipped around. The line of succession has also changed.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not got new titles.

Camilla Parker Bowles is the queen consort now that Charles is the monarch. She is currently the most senior woman in the royal family. As they are now known, Prince William and Kate Middleton will assume the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales. The heir and his spouses are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Cornwall, respectively.

King Charles’s first speech as king revealed Camilla, William, and Kate’s new titles. He also made it clear that Harry and Meghan were not included in his plans for the family at this time.

The king’s only comment about his youngest son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Meghan, was, “I also want to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their life overseas.”

Does Kate Middleton require Meghan Markle to bow before her?

The protocol for greeting has changed among the royal women now that Kate is the Princess of Wales and Camilla is the queen consort. Everyone must bow to Camilla. According to Page Six, Meghan must bow to both Kate and Camilla because Kate is the Princess of Wales. However, given that Megan no longer holds the HRH (Her Royal Highness) designation, some royal watchers doubt it will indeed occur.

“Technically, because Meghan Markle is no longer an HRH, she should curtsy to Catherine, but the Queen always made it clear that she did not expect it … Royals would expect the proper behaviour from those in the ‘official system,’ like the ambassadors, but the Queen really [didn’t] care a hoot if [others] didn’t curtsy on meeting her,” royal biographer Hugo Vickers stated.
