Toni Braxton Biography

Toni Braxton was the oldest of six children and was born on January 1, 1968, in Severn, Maryland, to Michael Braxton, an Apostolic minister and employee of a power company. Toni was not permitted to view movies or most television programmes because she was raised in a strict religious home.

She joined her sisters in the church choir when she was six. She later took piano lessons. Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, and the covertly viewed television show Soul Train were her musical influences. Throughout high school, Braxton competed in and won local talent shows to become a recording sensation.

Toni Braxton, a young African American singer with a deep, full-throated alto, rose to prominence as one of the hottest rhythm and blues (R & B) talents in the business with the help of her self-titled first album, which sold close to 10 million copies.

Secrets, her second album, achieved multi-platinum status and won numerous Grammy Awards (including one for best new artist), American Music Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards. A large audience was drawn to Braxton’s sensuous love songs and deep, finely textured voice.

Braxton was also part of the soundtrack for the 1995 drama Waiting to Exhale. The movie and its accompanying album featured Braxton’s “Let It Flow” were tremendous successes that increased her fan base.

Braxton contributed to the star-studded For Our Children (1996) album the following year. She launched her eagerly anticipated second album, Secrets, the same year, and it soon achieved platinum status.

For the album and the two songs, “Un-Break My Heart” and “You’re Makin’ Me High,” Braxton won Grammys in the pop and R&B categories.

In addition to working with other musicians, including producer-performer Babyface of LaFace, R. Kelly, Kenny G, David Foster, Soul Shock & Karlin, and others, Braxton cowrote and coproduced a number of the album’s songs. Australia, the Far East, Europe, and the United States were all stops on Braxton’s tour.

Braxton pursued teaching as his major during his time at Bowie State University. The music, though, was her actual vocation. In 1989, Braxton connected with a producer-songwriter at a local competition, giving her the name of a recording group named Starpoint.

A group member helped Braxton and her sisters land a recording contract with Arista Records in 1990, which led to the release of their single “The Good Life.” It included Braxton’s singing and piano skills and received airplay on the charts. Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds of LaFace Records and L.A. Reid.

In 1991, the pair signed Braxton to a contract after looking for a female singer to sign with their company. Babyface and Reid, however, had another project in mind for her before she could record her album—the music for Eddie Murphy’s motion picture “Boomerang” (1992). Give U My Heart, a duet with Babyface, and “Love Should Have Brought You Here,” another song by Braxton from the soundtrack, both became significant R&B hits.

The following year, LaFace released Toni Braxton, Braxton’s self-titled debut album, which immediately shot to the top of the charts thanks to five smash singles: “Another Sad Love Song,” “Breathe Again,” “You Mean the World to Me,” “I Belong to You,” and “How Many Ways.”
