Over a year after the first announcement of the shift, Netflix is now implementing its crackdown on password sharing.

Password sharing is restricted by the streaming service to household members. According to Netflix, account holders can utilise the “transfer profile” tool to encourage additional users to create their own paid accounts or spend an additional $7.99 per month to add more persons outside of the home.

Out-of-household users should have started getting emails about the change on Tuesday, according to Netflix.

When travelling or on the go, those who reside in a single home ought should still be able to access the account, according to Netflix.

While the firm had previously promoted account sharing with features like profiles and multiple streams, it claimed in March 2022 that the actions had been “impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”

Similar to before, customers are not pleased with the change.

In 2022, Net-flix conducted a test of paid password sharing in nations like Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. The business increased its paid account sharing into Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, Chile, and Spain earlier this year. In a statement to shareholders written at the conclusion of the first quarter of this year, the firm stated that it had experienced success.

“As with Latin America, we see a cancel reaction in each market when we announce the news, which impacts near term member growth,” it said. However, we notice a rise in membership and income as borrowers begin to activate their own accounts and current members add ‘extra member’ accounts.

According to the letter to shareholders, Netflix’s revenue in the first quarter of 2023 was $8.2 billion, up from the first quarter of 2022’s first quarter’s $7.9 billion.
