Nicki Minaj’s Grammys category fight escalates to a fight with Latto

Grammys will be given out, and Nicki Minaj is not happy about it. According to the Hollywood Reporter, after Minaj’s team submitted her No. 1 song, “Super Freaky Girl”, the Grammys switched the song’s type to pop in the rap category. Rapper Minaj has participated in the past as a solo artist; her only pop nomination was for the song “Bang Bang” alongside Jessie J and Ariana Grande. Minaj has never received a Grammy.

“Super Freaky Girl” has been at the top of Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart for eight weeks, as The Hollywood Reporter observed. The song mainly samples “Super Freak” by Rick James, popular music; however, Minaj raps throughout the song. Minaj slammed the choice on social media, saying in an Instagram video, “They keep changing the goalposts when it comes to me. Why does the goalpost always move when Nicki is involved?

Then Minaj mentioned Latto, shifting the ground for her battle. “If SFG has 2B pushed out RAP, Big Energy does, too!” Minaj tweeted about Latto’s song, which borrows a verse from Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” and the Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love.” The location and method of Latto’s submission of “Big Energy,” released during the last eligibility period but received a remix this year from DJ Khaled and Mariah Carey, remain unknown. I can’t win for losing, damn it! Latto seemed to respond, perhaps referring to her recent American Music Award nominations and BET Hip Hop Award for Song of the Year, “all these awards/noms I can’t even celebrate.”The two then engaged in a Twitter debate about Minaj’s lack of support for Latto before accusing one another of employing ghostwriters and bringing up the fact that Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, is a known rapist.

Of course, this is not the first time Minaj has engaged in conflict with the Grammys or on social media. Despite her triumph, she claimed that the 2020 Grammys were racist since they chose “the white man Bon Iver” as Best New Artist over her. Additionally, it isn’t the only Grammys submission scandal this year. A considered favourite after their single “Leave the Door Open” won four prizes the previous year, Silk Sonic revealed yesterday that they would not be submitting their album An Evening With Silk Sonic. In addition, the Weeknd and Minaj’s close pal Drake are still abstaining from the Grammys. There must be space for another over there.
