NICD ACKNOWLEDGES FS MEASLES OUTBURST HAS SPREAD TO OTHER AREAS OF SA

It has been confirmed by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) that a measles outbreak that started in Limpopo has now expanded over the entire nation.

It stated that cases had been reported in the Free State, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga.

227 cases in all have been reported thus far.

The vast majority of the cases were reported in Limpopo on October 8th, according to the NICD, who claimed to have been monitoring the incidents since then.

Kerrigan McCarthy, a consultant pathologist with the NICD:

“Several cases from Bethlehem and the surrounding area have been recorded in the Free State province’s Thabo Mafutsanyana District. In addition to causing temporary immunosuppression, secondary infections, and perhaps future diseases like tuberculosis, measles is a vaccine-preventable disease.”
