NFL Potential Journeymen: Players Who Scripted History

This season, several players became the first in NFL history to start for their sixth different team. Many non-quarterbacks haven’t blazed this path in NFL history. Read on to know more about the NFL potential journeymen.

The names of non-QBs who have started for six teams since the 1970 merger are here.

NFL Potential Journeymen

Oday Aboushi

The Chargers hired the guard this offseason as part of an offensive line makeover. Aboushi achieved this despite sustaining an ACL tear early in the season. Aboushi, a fifth-round selection by the Jets in 2013, has remained regarded as a potential starter for almost ten years.

After two years, the Jets trimmed their losses, sending Aboushi to the Texans. He used him as a fill-in starter for their playoff teams in 2015 and 2016. After visiting Seattle, Arizona, and Detroit, the Virginia product finally signed a one-year, $1.6 million contract with the Chargers.

Sam Adams

Adams, one of the most prominent players in NFL history, played for 14 seasons and made at least ten starts for six different teams. The intimidating defensive end, a top-10 in 1994, played alongside Hall of Famer Cortez Kennedy. He did this for the last half of his Seahawks career before teaming up with Tony Siragusa with the storied 2000 Ravens.

As a Raven, Adams chose to be two Pro Bowls and got a third trip to Hawaii in 2004.After helping the Bills to one of the highest defensive DVOA records in history. Adams briefly served as a starter for the veteran-heavy Raiders team that won the AFC in 2002. With the Bengals and Broncos, he concluded a career with 177 starts.

Jason Babin

Babin played for nine different teams before returning to one of them. He started six games for the Jets in 2014 due to his travels. In 2007, the edge rusher acted for Seahawks safety Michael Boulware. He did this after starting his career as a Texan first-round pick in 2004.

They then opened the floodgates for journeymen. From 2008 to 2015, Babin played for seven teams, moving cities three times throughout the season. Between 2010 and 2011, he combined for 30.5 sacks, showing a definite peak. Babin also started for the Jaguars in 2012 and the Chiefs in 2008. In 2015, he retired from football with the Ravens.

Jared Cook

Although Cook is the only one still healthy among the AFC contenders, the current Chargers have two starters from the six teams. Cook, a third-round choice by the Titans in 2009, has remained a highly sought-after free agent far into his 30s. He has had uneven regular-season success. He had one of the most significant playoff receptions in recent history.

He won Pro Bowls in Oakland and New Orleans. Cook’s fumble during the previous season’s playoffs was crucial to the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl success. The Rams (2013), Packers (2016), Raiders (2017), Saints (2019), and Chargers all signed free-agent contracts with Cook (2021).

Vonnie Holliday

Holliday, renowned for his lengthy tenure with the Packers and Dolphins, is here due to late-career pauses. The defensive end played for 15 seasons. He was starting three games for the 2009 Denver Broncos, two for Washington in 2010, and one for the 2012 Arizona Cardinals in his final year.

From 1998 to 2008, Holliday started all games for the Packers and Dolphins. He began with a brief intermission in Kansas City and finished with 62.5 sacks. Holliday participated on five teams that qualified for the playoffs. He didn’t play in a conference final. During a fruitful career, the adaptable defensive lineman did secure a couple of good contracts.
