Jerrod Carmichael to Host Golden Globes

The Golden Globes will once again be broadcast to spectators in January, and US actor and comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the event, organisers announced on Thursday. Following a reaction over ethical errors among the organisers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, network NBC cancelled its January 2022 airing of the ceremony, and major Hollywood companies and actors boycotted the event. The awards for film and television will return to screens next month (HFPA).

The Comcast-owned network announced in September that it would resume live coverage of the Globes, citing actions taken by the organisers to address voting diversity and integrity.

Carmichael, who received an Emmy Award in September for his programme Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel, continues the hosting traditions started by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ricky Gervais, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon.

In a statement, HFPA president Helen Hoehne stated that his comedic talents have delighted and entertained audiences while giving thought-provoking moments that are so vital in the times we live and th e unique talent that this show needs to host the awards season is Jerrod.

The 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony will take place on January 10. As part of a deal with the HFPA, NBC has stated that it will commit to airing the programme for a full calendar year.

Following a Los Angeles Times study that was released in 2021, the HFPA came under fire for the lack of racial diversity among its members. In addition, some questioned if the association’s tight ties to the film industry may have influenced the selection of nominations and winners.

In response, the HFPA took a wide range of actions, including the creation of new ethics principles. It added 103 additional voters from 62 foreign nations, bringing the total number of voters to 200. With members that are 19.5% Latino, 12% Asian, 10% Black, and 10% Middle Eastern, the overall voting body for the Golden Globe Awards is now 52% female and 51.5% racially and ethnically diverse, according to NBC
