Around 100 fans, who were wrapped in Moroccan flags, threw fireworks and other objects at police dressed in riot gear near Brussels South station. Police reacted with water cannons and tear gas as fans set fire to trash bags and cardboard boxes.
According to Reuters, police detained many fans and stated that the altercations were minor and did not result in any significant injury.
France is the first team to reach a second straight World Cup final since Brazil in 2002. Theo Hernandez scored a close-range goal to give Les Bleus a 1-0 advantage in the fifth minute after Kylian Mbappe, the tournament’s second-leading scorer, had his shot blocked.
France lost out on the opportunity to increase their lead as Jawad El Yamiq’s shot hit the post. Didier Deschamps’ team ultimately put Morocco to sleep when Randal Kolo Muani scored his first goal for his nation in the 79th minute, advancing to the final, where France will take on Argentina on December 18.
After the game, Morocco coach Regragui claimed that his team gave everything they had and that their heroics during the 2022 campaign in Qatar could not be diminished by the semi-final loss.
“The most important thing is to have shown a good face, to have shown that football in Morocco exists and that we have great supporters. We gave it our best. … [The loss] doesn’t take away everything we gave before,” Regragui stated.
