“Deltacron”- A Lab Mistake or an Evolutionary Mechanism?

Amidst the exponentially rising cases of the Omicron variant, the healthcare system and the people have been in a state of panic and uncertainty. This panic has taken a new turn as scientists from Cyprus have found a new strain of the virus- combining the properties of both the Delta and Omicron strains.

Leondios Kostrikis, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus, upon analyzing samples from 25 patients, said they had found a strain that displays, “Omicron-like genetic signatures within the Delta genomes”. “Deltacron”, as the scientists name it, is a rare case of co-infection, wherein a person contracts two diseases at the same time, in this case, the two strains of the coronavirus. The scientists, however, reported that it is too early to comment on the effect that the discovery of this new strain might have on the trajectory of the pandemic. The strain is yet to be commented upon by WHO and experts in other countries. Scientists have also reported that the emergence of Deltacron might be nothing more than a result of lab contamination, but again, it is too early to jump to conclusions.

Deltacron Experts

all around the world have urged the public not to panic and draw results already since all the signs are pointing to possible lab contamination. Although terms like ‘delmicron’, ‘flurona’ have found their special place in striking fear in the public’s mind, experts urge not to spread rumours around this one, the previous two being already situations scientists have anticipated.
