Portable Card and debit card customers in India will be allowed to switch networks as of October 1, 2023. Now, anyone may change their cell networks without jeopardizing the information. The ability to transmit credit and debit cards will follow suit.

In a departure from the customary procedure, the Reserve Bank of India announced that holders of credit, debit, or prepaid cards will be able to move to or choose their preferred card network.

Card Portability

Users of credit, debit, and prepaid cards will be able to switch between any card networks of their choosing, such as Visa, MasterCard, RuPay, etc., thanks to card portability. The user’s card accounts, balances, and past card usage will not be impacted by this process.

Currently, when a user applies for any Portable Card service, they are not given the option to select their preferred card network. The networks and the card issuer will decide on this.

In India, there are 5 card network firms. They are Diner’s Club, American Express, Visa, MasterCard, and RuPay. These businesses have partnerships with various financial institutions.

The card network portability option will be offered in new agreements that are signed after the date of the circular as well as in current agreements that are being renewed. Up to August 4, 2023, the RBI has requested comments on the draught circular from a variety of stakeholders Portable Card.

Less than 90 days are available for banks to execute these adjustments. The suggested start date for implementation is October 1, 2023.
