Angelina Jolie resigns

The actress and the organisation announced in a joint statement on Friday that she was “moving on” from her position as the organization’s special envoy “to engage on a broader set of humanitarian and human rights problems.”

In the joint statement, Angelina Jolie was cited as stating, “I will continue to do all in my power in the years to come to support refugees and other displaced people.” She also said she believed it was time to “work differently” by directly interacting with refugees and local groups.

Jolie joined the United Nations agency for refugees in 2001 and was named its special envoy in 2012. Her most recent trip was to Burkina Faso, according to the press release, and she has “carried out more than 60 field excursions to bear witness to stories of pain as well as hope and perseverance.”

After a lengthy and successful career with UNHCR, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi was cited as stating, “I appreciate her wish to shift her engagement and support her decision. I do not doubt that she will approach a larger humanitarian portfolio with the same passion and consideration, and I know the refugee cause will always hold a special place in her heart.
