Anjelica Huston Biography

Anjelica Huston is a famous American actress best known for her coolly beautiful depictions of strong-willed independent women. She was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 8, 1951.

Huston was the second child to be born to former ballerina Enrica Soma and film director John Huston (who was also the son of actor Walter Huston). The family moved from County Wicklow, Ireland, to California in 1953.

They relocated to a manor in County Galway the next year. Huston spent a lot of her early years at the remote estate. Due to his employment on movie sets, her father was gone for extended stretches. In 1962, Soma travelled to London with the kids after leaving him. Leaving school in 1968, Huston was an uninterested student who was more engaged in the political upheaval of the period. She took part in protests against the atomic bomb, among other things.

She then went through the audition process to play Juliet in the Romeo and Juliet production directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Although Zeffirelli was intrigued, Huston’s father notified his fellow director that he had chosen to cast her in his production of A Walk with Love and Death without first contacting Huston (1969).

Both the historical romance and Huston’s acting received negative reviews. In a London production of Hamlet, the young actress made the transition to theatre and filled Marianne Faithfull’s role as Ophelia. Soma passed away in a car accident while the play was in progress.

Then she immersed herself for a while in the glitzy Hollywood scene. She redoubled her efforts after being in a vehicle accident in 1980, taking acting classes and occasionally making appearances in supporting roles in movies and television.

In The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981), Huston starred as a lion tamer opposite Nicholson. From 1982 through 1983, Huston had frequent cameo appearances on Laverne & Shirley.

Huston was given a copy of Richard Condon’s novel Prizzi’s Honor in the hopes that she would think about playing deceitful Mafia daughter Maerose by the producer of the science-fiction comedy The Ice Pirates (1984), in which Huston played one of the titular buccaneers.

Nicholson persuaded her father to serve as the film’s director and starred as the Mafia hitman whom Maerose lusted over. Huston won the best-supporting actress Academy Award for her performance in the 1985 movie.

Then Huston appeared as a journalist in Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam War-era military drama Gardens of Stone (1987) and as a woman who is persuaded into disclosing sinister information in her father’s emphysema-inspired production of a James Joyce short tale, The Dead (1987).

She played supporting roles in the television miniseries Lonesome Dove (1989), which was based on the novel by Larry McMurtry, as well as the adaptations of A Handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh, Mr North by Thornton Wilder, and Mr North by Thornton Wilder.

In Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), Huston played the cunning mistress of Martin Landau’s character in a role that was out of nature, and in Enemies: A Love Story, she won praise for her performance of a Holocaust survivor who discovers that her husband has remarried (1989).

She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for the latter. She played the tyrannical Grand High Witch in The Witches, an adaptation of a Roald Dahl children’s book, and the homicidal con artist Lilly Dillon in The Grifters, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for best actor.

Her sporadic romance with Nicholson, which was widely reported in the media, also ended that year. After that, Huston portrayed other matriarchs, including the drolly dejected Morticia in The Addams Family (1991) and its sequel, Addams Family Values (1993), the Cuban immigrant Carmela Perez in The Perez Family (1995), and a Buffalo Bills fanatical housewife in the dark independent Buffalo ’66. She was the director of the 1996 movie Bastard out of Carolina, which was rejected for a theatrical release due to its explicit portrayal of sexual abuse. However, the movie eventually aired on the cable network Showtime. Before playing a hounded but brave Irish mother in Agnes Browne (1999), which she also directed, she took on the role of a wicked stepmother in Ever After A Cinderella Story (1998).

Huston became a fixture in Wes Anderson’s movies, lending her flinty presence to the surreal settings of The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), The Darjeeling Limited (2007), and The French Dispatch (2021). She also provided the voice of Isle of Dogs in Anderson’s stop-motion animated film (2018).

In the HBO drama Iron Jawed Angels from 2004, she played women’s suffrage pioneer Carrie Chapman Catt. Later, in Choke (2008) and 50/50, she portrayed a lady whose little kid was afflicted with cancer as well as the deranged mother of a sex addict (2011). She made a comeback to television in the series Smash as a demanding, talented Broadway producer (2012–13). Huston voiced characters for the animated children’s series Trollhunter: Tales of Arcadia and All Hail King Julien between the years 2015 and 2016.
